Santo Domingo.- An clash between Dominican truck drivers and Haitian protesters in Gilea, between the towns of Ouanaminthe and Cap Haitien on Monday led to the shooting death of a UN (MINUSTAH) peacekeeper, local media report.

Chilean sergeant Segundo Rodriguez Sanhueza, who had reached arrived on the scene of the demonstration to calm the protest, the Haitians, but encountered gunfire, which also injured a Haitian agent  police, whose identity wasn’t provided.

In a statement the Chilean Navy said Rodriguez Sanhueza was married with two children ages 10 and 3.

The incident was set off when Haitian groups tried to lynch a Dominican truck driver returning to the border, but managed to flee  into some thickets..

The incident spurred the Dominican truckers union (Fenatrado) to halt freight transport indefinitely, until the spate of recent attacks by Haitians is halted.

The truckers say Haitian vandals sacked four tractor trailers carrying freight worth US$100,000, to be exported from the port at Puerto Plata, according to the owners of the merchandise
