Haiti: 10,000 cholera cases, 106 deaths in Q1 2015

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (sentinel.ht) - There have been 10,328 cholera cases and 106 deaths in the first 11 weeks of 2015. To put in perspective the worsening crisis: during the same period in 2014, there were 3,850 cholera cases and 18 deaths.

It reflects an upsurge in cholera cases that began in September of 2014. The United Nations which is blamed for the epidemic but has denied accountability says the number of cases reported during the first months of 2015, are equivalent to those reported in 2012, much earlier in the health crisis.

Health officials say intense and widespread circulation of Vibrio cholerae O:1 is seen at the community level. The transmission of cholera in Haiti now presents an endemic pattern.
